The collection of twenty-eight letters covers the period 1796 to 1853 and contains observations on politics in the above-named towns, state and local elections, bills before Congress, life at Bowdoin College, farming, a sailing trip to Portland, Me., and trips to Mt. Sunapee and from Middlesex, Mass. to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1836 with descriptive comments by Rebecca Prentiss Kent Packard on travel methods, and "dirty" Pittsburgh, Pa. Several letters concern family events, such as engagements and marriages, Asa's views on the assets and liabilities of entering the medical profession, Charles' frustrations as a lawyer before switching to the ministry, references to Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), a distant relative, and poetry by Edward Newman Packard (1841-1917), the son of Rev. Charles Packard. Included also are Charles' first court writ as a lawyer, a page from Asa Packard's cash memorandum book, and a letter written in Latin by Charles to his brother Alpheus.

The Packard family originated in the Boston, Mass. area, but several members later settled in various parts of Maine, such as Brunswick and Wiscasset. This collection focuses on Rev. Asa Packard (1758-1843) of Lancaster, Mass. and his brother Rev.
